Teachers Beyond the classroom

Here at Estancia we as students sometimes overlook the very people that make our school, the teachers.  Our teachers plan and grade our papers but there is so much more to them then meets the eye.

Looking beyond the classroom, several teachers shared insights into their personal journeys, goals and the paths that led them to education and where they are at now. Their stories revealed a mix of lifelong dreams, unexpected career changes, and experiences that shaped who they are today.

Mr. Shelby, an ELA teacher here on campus shared that he had always dreamed of becoming a teacher and held onto that dream while serving in the military.

“I decided in college to be a teacher,” he said, “The intent of being in the military was to come back and become a teacher.”

Outside of the classroom, Mr. Shelby enjoys spending his time doing a variety of activities. “ I do a lot of reading, play lots of video games, I like to go to Disneyland and cook,” he shared.

His motivation for teaching goes beyond academics. He emphasized the importance of preparing students for life after school saying, “I want students to be able to find the information they need to make the best choices when they leave here. I want to give them all the skills they need to ask those big questions and find their own answers.”

Other teachers on campus have taken different paths into education.Mr Otero explained that, “I didn't have a thought about what I was doing. I was trying to work out a bunch of things,” he said. He initially tried to become an aerospace engineer since he was into maths, but later realized it wasn't the right fit. “As time went on, I realized I didn’t like it.”

Mr. Otero  credited an AP US History teacher as a major influence, saying, “My biggest role model was my AP US History teacher, and ironically I also became an AP US History teacher as well.” Reflecting on his experiences they advised students to explore different opportunities: “Try new things, see what you like.” He also joked and said,“being super sarcastic is my secret talent.”

And one of our newer teachers, Mrs Atilano said that she has enjoyed being here at our school, saying, “I really enjoy Estancia and feel like it's pretty natural.” She also shared some of her personal interests, adding, “I like music, musical theater, and pop culture.” Her path to teaching was not straightforward.

“I thought about almost everything other than teaching at first. I feel like the more I explored different pathways, I just kept coming back to the classroom,”

She also expressed her goals for students and the school community: “I want to continue to make sure when teachers come to Estancia, they’re not just learning English, but learning how to be a part of the school and the culture.”

Learning about teachers' personal stories helps students build stronger connections with them. By understanding their backgrounds, interests, and dreams, students may find it easier to relate to their teachers and feel more comfortable in class.

Remember, all teachers at the end of the day are people with passions, goals, and stories worth sharing. Next time you sit down before that bell rings, consider asking your teacher about their story- you might be surprised with what you end up learning.
