What is ASB?
Many students see posters around school, listen to the announcements in the morning, attend events, but not everyone sees the real purpose of our Associated Student Body. There have been some questions circulating around school lately, other than school events and posters, what else does ASB do for our school, and how do ASB presidents contribute to our school?
ASB is in charge of spirit weeks, events, fundraisers, and much more that students take part in. ASB is practically everywhere in school.
Those questions have been answered by many ASB members along with the teacher, Mrs. Figueroa. One senior member of ASB named Milonee Shah explained her thoughts on what it means to be president.
“I think that it's important for student voices to be heard, and if there's a leader to do that, it’s to ensure that all community members are being heard at once. Being student president here, I noticed there's a lot of different opinions in school, there's a lot of controversy going on outside of school. Having a leader to lead school in different community events, shows that there is someone that’s stepping up and that someone cares. It just gives me a reason, like, yeah, someone cares and that someone is at your school being ASB president, showing you that I care about your opinions, I care about you as one. I think the ASB president should be someone that cares.”
Her inspirational words show what it means to be a true ASB leader. She believes that the president has to be involved, not only in school, but to the community itself. That helps reassure students that their voice will be heard at school.
ASB teacher Mrs. Figueroa said something similar.
“ It’s not about popularity, even though they make it about popularity, it goes beyond that. These are the leaders that you’re going to see that care about school culture, kids that are going to invite you, make you feel welcome, make you feel included. People think that it’s like, ASB stays in ASB, and it’s not like that.”
The newly elected ASB president for next year, Karely Prado, a Junior said,
“ I think the main purpose of ASB is mainly to shape the purpose of the school’s culture. We do much like assemblies, football games, dances, it’s to make people feel connected to the school and that they are a part of something bigger. Those are some ways we get people to connect more. We do a lot of behind the scenes that people don’t see, like the club food rally, spirit days, and everything that has to do outside academics was all by ASB. The role of ASB presidents and cabinets is really to be the voice of the students.”
Karely Prado’s words show that ASB does a lot of behind the scene work that nobody sees and that they are in charge of a lot more than what we think.
ASB will be your voice and help you feel welcomed here at Estancia High school. ASB is not just an elective that does stuff for the school, it is meant to build a community. Our ASB will always be there to welcome every student.
