Athlete of FEBRUARY - Jordyn johnson

Jordyn Johnson is a sophomore on the girls wrestling team who has been awarded Athlete of the Month. This award meant a lot to Jordyn because wrestling is a male dominated sport but she stood out to people as a dedicated athlete on the wrestling team. “Female wrestlers don't get as much recognition as they should so I feel like this is a good example for girls who might want to join wrestling.” Jordyn encourages all females to try wrestling because she ended up falling in love with the sport.

Jordyn started wrestling the summer before freshman year. She says her boyfriend has been her main inspiration for wrestling. It was a brand new sport to her but she kept working hard to improve. Her first match came around and it was against Costa Mesa. Jordyn had won her match and she can still remember the sound of everyone cheering for her and celebrating.

Even though Jordyn gets nervous before matches sometimes, she is able to handle her stress very well. She gets most nervous when she first sees her opponent, but once she starts wrestling, she lets go of all the nerves. She never lets her fears get in the way of her play. Coach Chaves explains, “Though she might feel a little nervous at first, she isn't afraid to face a challenge.”

Jordyn has become the wrestler she is because of all of the hard work she has put in. Since she started wrestling, she has been a committed athlete and ready for any challenge. She pushes herself and her teammates to be the best they can be. Emily Ebergenyi states that “She makes people feel welcomed on the team by not judging them based on talent but she is able to help everyone grow as a person and as an athlete” Coach Chaves also explains that Jordyn never complains or makes excuses which helps bring up the level and spirit of the whole team.

Jordyn is an inspiration and leader to all the girls on her team. According to her coach, she has elevated the Estancia Girls Wrestling team to another level and brought up their reputation. She deserves the award of “Athlete of The Month” because of her resilience and extra work to stand out in a male dominated sport. Emily Ebergenyi states, “She is one of the best overall people and best athletes I have ever met, she is super disciplined and pushes me to be great.”
