Boys Baseball Recap

After giving up a 5-1 lead at the top of the 7th inning, the Eagles pulled off an exciting win against Savanna on Friday March 20th at home. Nico Viramontes was the starting pitcher through 6 innings in this first league win of the season. “I thought my stuff was good, I focused on throwing lots of strikes, putting it in the zone, and letting my defense do the work.” said Viramontes, who admitted he got the team in a little trouble during the 7th inning. Even with a questionable foul ball call, the great relief pitching from Lincoln Silva and steady offense allowed Estancia to regain the lead in the 8th inning and win 6-5.

Friday's matchup against Savanna was one-sided up until the 6th inning. The Eagles started off strong by getting back to back base hits by Miles Dodge and Sean Sweeny. In the second inning Brooks Harder who went 4-4 in the game getting on base every time, was driven in by Nolan Piesik making the score 3-0. Carlos Hauser and Brooks Harder both had their big moments in the bottom of the 5th, helping the team bring in some more runs. With 1 out, Carlos hit a sacrifice flyball to score Sean Sweeny making the score 4-1. Adding to the 5th inning excitement, Brooks Harder hit a single with the bases loaded to score another run.

That’s when things started to fall apart for the Eagles. Super fan Riley Lyng who has been to every eagle baseball game this season said the game made her very “anxious.” “The team has this way of getting into trouble in the last innings and making me really nervous...” Said Riley. Trouble on the mound from Viramontes combined with a Savanna right field foul ball that was called fair, allowed Savanna to tie 5-5 in the 7th inning. Coach Goellrich expressed how he was proud of his players for handling the adversity really well. With the score tied 5-5 Lincoln Sliva saved the game by throwing amazing strikes and getting 3 outs in a row. After 3 quick Eagle outs, our defense headed out to the 8th inning hoping to prevent any more Savanna runs. With some great 3rd to 1st throws by Noah Paszternak the Eagles quickly got out of the inning and headed to the bottom of the 8th, it was now their turn to bat.

Estancia started off the inning strong with a base hit down the line by Noah Paszternak. Nolan PIesik groundout advanced Noah to second. Savanna walked Miles Dodge leading to runners on 1st and 2nd with only 1 out. “We had all the faith in Sweeny coming through, he hit a hard hit and made it easy with their left fielder missing the ball.” Said Goellrich. Sean’s great hit was able to score Noah in leading to a final score of 6-5.

This first league win gives the eagles great momentum heading into their next league game against La Quinta on March 27th. “They stayed together as a team, as a unit. That’s our biggest strength. We aren’t relying on one individual, every player has a role, every player knows their role.” Said Goellrich.

The Eagle’s hard fought 6–5 victory over Savanna showed not only their talent, but their resilience. After letting their lead slip away, Estancia responded with composure, teamwork, and clutch performances when it mattered most. Key hits by Brooks Harder and Sean Sweeny to lockdown relief pitching by Lincoln Silva, every player contributed to the win. This Estancia Baseball team is looking like they will put together another successful season.
